LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The real taste of Independence

Sir,

For the last so many years we have been observing Independence Day but suddenly for the last few years Independence Day has became synonym with tight security, fear of militant attack.

So a day of freedom turns into a day of confinement for a common citizen, strangely we fear to celebrate our own independence because of our own fellow citizens who are dissatisfied with our own created system. Bandh and strikes on any national days has become a common thing in northeast.

Psychologically people are so terrified of militant organizations that bandhs were observed forcefully. In Kashmir national days have become common holidays when people takes rest and watches TV. However very few watches the Prime Minister’s speech telecast in the national television probing the same old issues but with different narrators.

In another word national days are ‘just another’ ceremony for politicians and bureaucrats, mere holidays for common people and nightmare for security forces.

Our new president always talks of India becoming a superpower, but how? We have not been able to fulfill the objectives of the first five year plan which is still the basic objective of our latest five year plan, instead of dreaming of becoming a super power, lets first get freedom from poverty, Illiteracy, caste divide, communalism then we will have the real taste Of Independence

Uncalled hike in insurance premium

Sir,

From July 2002 onwards, premium of insurances has been increased drastically by government owned insurance companies.

For instance, premium for third party insurance has increased to more then hundred percent and premium for so called terrorist cover in property insurances have also been raised alarmingly.

If queried about the steep rise, the insurance officials prefer to hold the entry of private players in the field of insurance responsible.

However, if the reason be so, then the premium should be decreased and quality of services should be enhanced.

One cannot compete by just increasing the price of premium. Actually these type of policies by government owned insurance would result in shifting of consumer to other companies.

Animal sacrifices

Sir,

Animal sacrifices to propitiate the  gods  has  come into focus  with the  visit of the  Nepalese King Gyanendra to  Kamakhya temple , where  he offered prayers and performed animal sacrifices. Animal sacrifices as a means of worship  has been a part of some  religions of the  world. But it  has  also been a contentious  issue. I think the idea of animal
sacrifices as a means of worship is bad per se.. and people should avoid this practice at all cost. Some very good arguments  can be put forward in support of this line of thinking. The idea of animal sacrifices to propitiate  the gods is  somewhat incompatible  with the  very idea of  god. Because god is the  highest embodiment of  love, compassion and
kindnesses. Therefore   how  can that form  be propitiated by inflicting pain and death on another life, even if it is that of animals. Moreover, all life
is the  creation of  god. So why  would HE  want to be  worshipped / propitiated by taking the  life of some of  HIS  creations. The concept of animal sacrifices is a man made  one . It  can never be the idea of god.
Finally , I firmly believe that the  noblest way to propitiate the  Almighty is to be  good human being and to invoke HIS name/worship  HIS with a pure heart. You do  not  even need too many rituals, certainly  not
animal sacrifices

Deplorable condition of Athgaon Area

Sir,

Very often we get to read in your "Letter to the Editors Section" about the annoyance for the deplorable civic state of the B-class city of Guwahati. It seems that the civic administration (GMC or MCD) is in a deep slumber and there is no sign of waking up. We may term the civic authority as "RIP VAN WINKLE" or RIP in abbreviated form. There have been formation of committees, action plan, master plan, super plan  for revival of the city but only on papers. That’s a waste of stationery too and loss to exchequer.

The areas which are generally covered in public grievances are Rajgarh, Panjabari etc.  At this point of time I would like to draw the attention of the sleeping RIP and also the citizens of Guwahati about the Athgaon Pukhor. It must be sounding strange to many surfers. At the initiative of the previous AGP Government, decision was taken to construct a flyover across the Railway Gate No: 5. The project seems to be in a limbo and there seems to be no sign as to when  the so-called flyover will be completed. The un-ambitious project has at least resulted in formation of a pukhori (pond) near Railway gate no: 5 and so this may be named as “Athgaon Pukhor”. The whole of the approach road from Gate No: 4 have turned into a drain system (including pavement if there was one) and which needs no drain cleaning – are you listening RIP ?

Relentless Developmental work on the through way is being carried out from Secretariat to Airport so that our representatives and Bureaucrats can commute peacefully and smoothly to the Airport. This is a short-term attitude of the Govt. Because such kind of dirty Pukhor is always the birthplace of diseases and epidemic and the Govt. will be solely blamed for it. Leave aside the flyover construction, at least the city can be kept clean and ultimately safe from health hazards. The project was to ease the public conveyance because of the positioning  of railway gate between A.T.Road and Bharalumukh. But actually it has made conveyance much more difficult now. The Govt. should stop planning and instead adhere to the regular civic duties of the GMC like garbage removal and drain cleaning, so that, the citizens can live a healthy life.

Put an end to this  'bandh ' culture.

Sir,

There was yet another Assam bandh on 15th June 2002. So the people of Assam continue with their bandh culture. Are we ever going to shake off this bandh culture? Are we not bothered about the damage that repeated bandh does to our economy and the very bad message that it sends across to the world?

I
n today's competitive economic environment, business and investments, naturally gravitates towards places with minimal socio-economic and political disruptions. In that context, our continued bandh culture would seriously impede our ability to attract businesses and investments.

As such, we have to struggle a lot to uplift our state economy due to a host of factors. On top of that, our inability to shake off this suicidal bandh culture would only exacerbate our economic difficulties. Every bandh inflicts serious economic costs on the society by stopping the wheel of economic activity.

Moreover, although most bandh are called for apparently relevant socio-economic and political issues, especially those pertaining to poor and weaker sections of society, but in reality, they are very detrimental to the interests of those poor and weaker sections, many of who are dependant on generating income and economic activities on a daily basis.

For these people, every bandh actually constitutes a violation of their fundamental tight to livelihood as part of the wider interpretation of   article 21 of the constitution. In a society like ours, ridden by so many problems, there would   be innumerable occasions, which might warrant registering of political protest. Does it mean that a bandh will be called on every such occasion? If so, then we will have to have   a bandh every week and we will have to bid goodbye to economic development.

Therefore if political protest has to be registered on various occasions, people have to learn to do so without disrupting the economic train. Since we are afflicted by a bandh culture, there would be elements who would   call for a bandh every now and then. But it is extremely important that people themselves do not fall prey to this bandh culture. They   should not pay heed to these bandh   and must carry on with their normal activities. Assam cannot afford to be afflicted by this bandh culture anymore. Let us shake off this bandh culture once and for all

Foot injury

Sir,

I am a NRI & living in US. While visiting Assam a few months back, I have noticed many people in different towns & villages with foot injuries.

Foot related injuries could occur whenever one is walking or running. This can be in the field, market place, playing or exercising. Normal walking places three times a persons body weight on his feet whereas running results in ten times ones body weight pounding through person’s feet.

This makes the feet susceptible to many different conditions ranging from tendinitis to bursitis to fractures or sprains of the feet. Regardless of ones age or activity level, no one is immune to foot injuries.

In an event of any foot injury, the person needs to contact a doctor immediately.

War hysteria

Sir,

There is a war hysteria prevailing in our country, and people are justifying war as the only means to solve the insurgency problem sponsored by Pakistan.

But the question is that  if war is the permanent solution to deal with Pakistan, then what about China who had once and is still sponsoring insurgency in northeast?

It seems that to solve our insurgency problem, we have to go for war with three or four countries, which is impossible.

India has to solve its internal problems first to tackle insurgency and remove the causes which create insurgency. Firstly, India should strengthen its own immune system from inside to resist external aggression, since a weak immune system will always cause diseases irrespective of how much medicine we take.
