Usual Suspect once again champion of Brain Jam Quiz 2009

Guwahati, August 31: It was yet another small step to reverse the after-effects of Global warming, and the Guwahatians took part in hundreds to be a part of it. The Brain Jam Open Quiz 2009 held at Pragjyoti ITA Centre, Machkowa recently, was special one this year, with Global warming as the theme, it made a small social endeavour, for the larger good of human kind.

The annual event has made a mark for it among quiz buffs of the region had it all. It had something to offer to all age groups, young and old alike, entertainment mixed with social awareness and knowledge.

Global warming being the disaster hovering over the man kind, it was appropriate that the organisers, Priya Communication, chose the event of such a mass appeal chose to touch upon this subject. A short video to highlight the problems and to pledge an initiative to mitigate the impending disaster by enlightening the audience to help reverse the affects of global warming was brought together by Sashanka Barbaruah of Toon Works.

More than 400 participants, poured into the auditorium, to answer the 25 questions put to them by Barry O Brien, the ace quizmaster who is well known for his one line repartees, and with the hope to make it to the final six teams of the quiz.

From the preliminary round 6 teams were to be selected for the finals but Barry announced a tie-up between four teams for the sixth spot. It was the team of Fortune Hunters renamed the ‘Smiling Docs’ by Barry, in sync with his sense of humour for they were Medical students who broke the tie. In the final teams there was a father-daughter duo that Barry chose to call ‘Pa and me’ and another of mother-daughter who were given the name ‘Ma and me’. Barry said, “History is being written here as never in the 2000 odd quizzes that I have hosted has there been such a diverse set of teams.” He congratulated Mr. Anoop Khanna, of Priya Communication, the man behind the event for his initiative to provide such a wide platform to the quiz lovers of the region.

The audiences were kept to their feet by showering them with a wide range of gifts sponsored by ITC, Head Turners, Pizzeria, ATTSA, Aircel, Korangani tea etc. There were a whole lot of questions for the audience who didn’t miss a chance to lay their hands on the spread of prizes. Barry ensured that all enjoyed by inviting the young ones on to the stage to dance to a tune of Michael Jackson. A tribute was paid to the legend by gathering together his master performances. Mr. Pratik Hazela, the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup graced the event as the chief guest.

The ‘Usual Suspects’ also the winners of 2008 Brain Jam walked away with the first prize package trip to Malaysia sponsored by Sona bath fittings, Throughout the quiz Amrit P Chetia and Bidyut B Bailung had an edge over the others. The team, Q-Factor consisting of Maharnav Gogoi and Parikshit Pegu were the first runners-up and won an LCD Tv sponsored by Fast track. The team ‘Ma and me’ were the second runners-up winning a camera.

IndianOil Corporation the main sponsors celebrating their Golden jubilee along with The Assam Tribune, SBI, News Live, LICI, Hotel Landmark, BNAS and www.northeasttribune.com ensured a fun and regaling evening.

The team of Priya Communication hopes that the initiative that they have taken on global warming is carried forward and all who made the event a success will pledge to make the planet greener and safer.
