Shillong, Aug 25 : The Meghalaya Cabinet has exempted entertainment taxes for double-screen multiplexes and mini cinema halls for a period of five years.

''We have decided to exempt entertainment taxes for cinema halls and multiplexes for five years , but investors will have to start paying these taxes after five years,'' Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma told reporters last night.

Dr Sangma said the government decided not to imposed any taxes on multiplexes and hi-fi digital cinema halls since it was a new scheme.

''The tax exemption is to encourage investment in this sector and generate lot of economic activities and provide opportunities for tourist coming to the state capital for entertainment programmes,'' Dr Sangma said.

He said the government would also like to encourage people to invest in mini-cinemas and multiplexes.

The Cabinet had also approved the proposal on amendment of Meghalaya Tax on luxuries hotels and lodging Act 1991.

''The amendment on certain sections of the Act had been approved by the cabinet and the bill would be introduced in the forthcoming Assembly session in order to get it passed,'' Dr Sangma said.
