AC not to field candidates in Arunachal Assembly polls Itanagar, Sep 23 : Regional party Arunachal Congress (AC) has decided not to field any candidate in the forthcoming assembly election in the state due on October 13. In a communiqué here today, AC working committee member LK Yangfo said the decision was taken during its foundation day celebration on September 20 at Naharlagun. He also informed that the AC will support the Congress in all the constituencies of the state. Earlier, in a press conference, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Nabam Tuki disclosed that the AC has merged en-block with Congress. The party was formed after the historic referendum rally held at Naharlagun during 1995 in the wake of the refugee movement spearheaded by the apex students' body All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) demanding deportation of Chakma and Hajong refugees from the state. With the expiry of the deadline set for deportation of the refugees as set by the Congress government led by Gegong Apang as the chief minister, the entire ministry resigned from the party and floated the AC. During the 1999 assembly polls the party contested the election without any success. However, in the 2004 assembly elections the party managed to win in two seats namely Daporijo and Mariyang-Geku. While JK Panggeng (Mariyang-Geku) has joined the Congress ahead of this election and managed the Congress ticket, Daklo Nidak (Daporijo) has failed to get Congress ticket and is contesting under Trinamool Congress banner.
