Manipur govt to appoint doctors to improve health services

Imphal, Sep 15 : The Manipur government might appoint about 400 doctors to provide proper healthcare to the people of the state, official sources said today.

The state Cabinet took a decision in this regard yesterday.

Nurses and other Paramedical personnel might also be appointed, the sources added.

The state Health Department has been facing shortage of doctors specially in the hill areas.

A new medical institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, was also expected to start functioning from next year at Porompat, Imphal East.

The capacity of the institute would be about 100 seats.

Most hospitals in the districts were not able to function properly due to shortage of staff and infrastructure.

The government was also planning to depute specialists, specially paediatricians and gynaecologists in the rural areas.

Operation theatres were also not functioning in the rural areas.

Due to shortage of doctors and lack of infrastructural facilities, cases of infant mortality were also reported in the rural areas, the sources said.
