HANM to protest UCIL project in Meghalaya

Shillong, Sep 14 : The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement(HANM) has said it would join the protest against the recent government decision to lease out land to Uranium corporation India Limited (UCIL) to undertake pre-project programmes for uranium mining in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

In a press communique issued here HANM said the step was taken in support to other NGOs that are protesting against the government move to lease the land to UCIL to undertake development work in areas for uranium mining.

The HANM also lashed out at the NGOs formed in support of the UCIL project and alleged that their move was to exploit the wealth of the area without concern for health issues.

Meanwhile, Khasi Students' Union (KSU), spearheading the movement against the Uranium mining in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, would take out s public rally at the uranium site today.

The KSU leadership said it would not remain silent if the demand for revocation of lease agreement with UCIL is not met within September 15. Earlier, KSU had served deadline of September 15 to cancel the lease agreement.
