NE states to install fake notes identification devices in banks and polices station Guwahati, Sep 10: With anti- national elements making frequent attempts to pump in fake currency notes in the Northeast India, couple of states of region has sought for installation of fake notes identification devices to all bank branches and police stations. Tripura minister for Finance, Badal Chowdhury recently urged the RBI to provide fake notes identification devices to all bank branches. Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi has recently observed, “Fake currencies are generally introduced in the markets, bazaars in the rural areas and therefore, it is also felt necessary that all the police stations especially in the districts with international border are equipped with fake currency detection equipments so that these can be detected easily,” He argued that the state government is giving utmost importance to the FICN (Fake Indian currency Notes) cases. There is a Cell in the CID Organization which is looking after FICN cases and they are directly supervising the investigation of the cases. Northeastern states shares long international border with countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Myanmar. Sources in Border security force added, “Now there is an organized syndicate which runs the fake currency racket especially along Indo-Bangladesh border. We even suspect the hand of militants in operation of this type of illegal business,” Sources in BSF pointed out in 2005 fake currencies amounting to Rs 6,300 were sized along Assam-Meghalaya frontier. In 2006 it increased Rs 33, 600. In 2007 and 2008, it further increased to Rs 50,600 and Rs 52,000 respectively. This year already we have seized around Rs 74,450.
