Tripura urges to revise BPL identification mechanism

Agartala, Sep 9 : Tripura proposed Centre to make revision of the process and spare a serious thought on modalities of identification of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

Addressing a conference of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Ministers today at Vigyan Bhawan, Tripura RD Minister Jitendra Choudhury opposed the existing 13 parameters for determining the BPL category.

He underlined that as per the guidelines framed by RD Ministry, the state had undertaken a survey in 2003 but unfortunately the ministry had made it clear in it’s direction that BPL families, according to the 2001 Census estimation, would not exceed 44 per cent of the total population.

As a result, the figure estimated by Centre did not reflect the annual financial status of the state and more over, many poor families mostly SC/ST still remained out of the list and deprived from the benefits.

''We observed the process of fixing parameters and limiting BPL figures is totally unrealistic and unjustified and it needs immediate modification,'' Mr Choudhury added.
