Political instability affected Meghalaya: Lapang

Shillong, Sep 8 : Political instability was the main stumbling block that had been stalling development activities in Meghalaya, Chief Minister DD Lapang has asserted.

''The state has not seen any major development due to political instability,'' he said while speaking at function yesterday for laying foundation stone of a new school building.

At present, with a stable government at the top, Mr Lapang exuded confidence that development can definitely be achieved provided the people have confidence in the government and extend their cooperation.

In the last 15 years, Meghalaya witnessed more than 10 governments. This term alone, the state saw four governments, including the one and half month long President's Rule.

Stating that the Planning Commission had increased the plan allocation to Meghalaya by 40 per cent, Mr Lapang said the people of the state ''should appreciate the efforts of the state government'' to bring about overall development in different sectors.

He also urged NGOs to extend their cooperation to his government to ensure that development in the state is not hampered at any cost.

''We should open up our minds if we want to see that our state marches ahead in development,'' Mr Lapang urged.
