Constn's 109th amendment's rectification passed by Assam Assembly Guwahati, Sep 5 : A special one-day session of the Assam Assembly today unanimously passed the rectification of 109th amendment of the Constitution whereby the provision of reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) is to be extended for another ten years. The two Houses of Parliament have already passed the rectification and a few states, including Assam, are yet to give a formal nod. State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi raised the rectification proposal, which was unanimously passed by the House. However, leader of Opposition Chandra Mohan Patowary, during the discussion on the rectification, maintained that the government had failed to do anything tangible for the uplift of the SCs and STs, which led to a sharp reaction from the chief minister asking the Opposition parties not to politicise the reservation issue. Minority legislators of the ruling Congress-led coalition also created a controversy when they urged for reservation for the Muslim community.
