UPA committed to bring peace in northeast: PM

Shillong, Feb 27: Asserting that peace, stability and security are the pre-requisites for development, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the UPA government will ensure that the people of the northeast live to their full potential and march in tandem with the rest of the countrymen towards prosperity.

"We ushered in peace in many states of the region through dialogue with disgruntled groups and efforts are on to bring lasting peace to the whole region," Singh told an election rally here.

He said UPA was ensuring that the people of the northeast live to their full potential and march in tandem with the rest of the countrymen towards prosperity.

The country is built on its 'unity in diversity' and Congress was the 'main link', Singh said, adding youths of the region have shown commitment to hard work but are forced to leave their states in search of job opportunities.

"We are seeing to it that adequate employment opportunities are being created for such youths. The UPA has given major thrust to IT development in the region which will open up employment opportunities in the entire region," he said and showered praises on the education level in the northeast.

Singh said the North East Industrial and Investment Policy will promote investment in the region in hotels, nursing homes, old age homes, besides in adventure and leisure sports and also in new power projects.
